David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars performed two shows at Sheffield’s City Hall on 6 June 1973.
It was the 130th date of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, which had begun on 29 January 1972.
The concert went very well as usual, but I was on auto-pilot for this one too. The after-gig party back at the hotel was very entertaining though, and it was a very special evening all round. Both Labi Siffre and Lulu had coincidentally both been performing somewhere in the West Yorkshire area, at separate gigs of course, and they too were both booked in to the Hallam Tower Hotel for the night. Both Labi and Lulu joined us for drinks in the hotel bar, and the bar happened to have a decent piano in it. I never, ever carried a camera with me on any of our tours, and ever since very often I have wished that I had done so. Some sort of movie camera, whatever might have been available in 1973, would have been even better. The image of David Bowie, Lulu and Labi Siffre grouped around the hotel bar piano (I think Labi played the piano) singing ‘My Funny Valentine’ would have been priceless now I think. Well, maybe not priceless, but valuable enough.
