‘Julie’ was recorded during the Never Let Me Down sessions, and released as the b-side of David Bowie’s 1987 single ‘Day-In Day-Out’.

It was one of the outtakes recorded during the album sessions, which also included the ‘Time Will Crawl’ b-side ‘Girls’.

It is unclear why ‘Julie’ was left off Never Let Me Down; certainly it is superior to some of the tracks that were included on the album, an up-tempo rocker mercifully free from overproduction, and could well have been a hit single in its own right.

The release

‘Day-In Day-Out’ was released as a single on 23 March 1987, ahead of the Never Let Me Down album.

The 7″ single had ‘Julie’ on the b-side. The UK 12″ featured a remix of ‘Day-In Day-Out’, an extended dub mix, and ‘Julie’.

Never Let Me Down was reissued in 1995 by Virgin Records. It contained three bonus tracks: ‘Julie’, ‘Girls’ (Extended Edit), and ‘When The Wind Blows’.

In 2018 ‘Julie’ was included on Re:Call 4 in the Loving The Alien (1983-1988) box set.
