David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars performed at Bournemouth’s Winter Gardens theatre on 25 May 1973.
It was the 121st date of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, which had begun on 29 January 1972. On this occasion part of the show was filmed by a crew from BBC TV’s Nationwide, and fans outside the venue were interviewed.
The tour had previously called at Bournemouth’s Chelsea Village on 14 March and 25 May 1972.
The Winter Gardens opened in 1937 as an indoor bowling green. It was later converted into a concert hall, and was subsequently also used as a theatre. In 2007 Bournemouth council took the decision to demolish it, despite a local residents’ campaign.
